The REE Models JM017 is a HO 1/87 scale reproduction of the SNCF 040 DE 528 diesel locomotive, presented in its original livery from Era III. This analog model is designed for two-rail DC layouts. It depicts a locomotive from the 040 DE 500 family, later known as BB 63500, with raised number plates and the markings ROUEN – LE HAVRE.
Real railway equipment
The 040 DE 500 belong to a major SNCF family of diesel-electric locomotives. They entered service from 1956 to handle a wide range of duties on the French rail network. Their original designation combines the 040 wheel arrangement—corresponding to four powered axles—with DE, the abbreviation for Diesel-electric.
These locomotives were equipped with a Diesel engine driving a generator, which in turn supplied the electric traction motors installed in the bogies. This diesel-electric architecture provided great operational flexibility, especially appreciated for shunting, freight services, and operations on secondary lines.
The 040 DE 500 series was built from 1956 to 1971. During the general renumbering of SNCF motive power in 1962, units 040 DE 501 to 790 became BB 63501 to BB 63790, while later deliveries extended the series up to the BB 64080. The 040 DE 528 represented here therefore belongs to the machines that later received the registration BB 63528.
With their cab offset between two long-length hoods of different sizes, the 040 DE 500 have an instantly recognizable silhouette. Their robust design and versatility made them particularly well suited to short-distance operations: forming and reworking trains, serving branch lines, hauling individual wagons, local freight trains, and towing certain omnibus services.
Decoration reproduced
The locomotive reproduced carries its original SNCF livery, characteristic of the early years of the series during Era III. The decoration features a green body underlined by yellow stripes, a classic presentation of French diesel locomotives from this period. Raised number plates reinforce the character of these machines from the 1950s and the early 1960s.
This version also includes the ROUEN – LE HAVRE inscriptions. It fits into the railway atmosphere of the SNCF West region, at a time when diesel traction was gradually taking over from steam for local and freight services.
The scale model
Reference JM017 is a REE Models diesel locomotive intended for analog operation. It runs on a HO layout in two-rail DC. Its 1/87 scale makes it easy to integrate into installations recreating the SNCF network of Era III.
This miniature specifically represents the 040 DE 528 in its original condition. It stands out with its green livery with yellow stripes, SNCF markings, and raised plates. The model provides a consistent reproduction for staging the early days of dieselization on a miniature French railway layout.
Use on a miniature railway layout
A 040 DE 528 naturally fits into a steam depot undergoing modernization, a junction station, a small freight yard, a goods yard, or an industrial spur installation. Its versatile role allows for many operating scenarios, from wagon shunting to hauling local service trains.
On a layout evoking SNCF Era III, it can be placed in front of covered wagons, open wagons, flat wagons, tank wagons, or other freight vehicles representative of the period. It is also suitable for depicting hauled omnibus-type services when the layout context supports it. Its original livery is especially well matched to evocations of the 1950s and early 1960s, before the widespread adoption of BB 63500 series registrations.
