The REE Models JM017S reproduces the SNCF diesel locomotive 040 DE 528, in its original Period III livery. Built at HO scale 1/87, this machine is associated with the West network and carries the “Rouen–Le Havre” indication. It represents a locomotive from the 040 DE 500 family, later designated the BB 63500 series. This version is designed for DC 2-rail model railways and features DCC Sound technology.

Real rolling stock

The 040 DE locomotives are part of the diesel fleet that supported the modernization of French railway traction after the Second World War. They helped gradually replace steam traction for shunting, local services, and train operations on secondary lines. Their diesel-electric design combined a diesel engine with an electric traction chain supplying the powered axles.

The designation 040 indicates that the locomotive has four powered axles. The 040 DE units of the 500 series are recognizable by their distinctive silhouette: a central cab flanked by two hoods of different lengths. This layout provides excellent visibility during operations and suits shunting duties, branch-line servicing, and the hauling of light trains.

The 040 DE 500 units were later redesignated BB 63500 in SNCF numbering. These locomotives formed an emblematic family of French diesel traction, strongly represented in freight yards, marshalling yards, depots, industrial facilities, and on many non-electrified lines. Their versatility made them suitable for both wagon movements and local deliveries.

The reproduced livery

040 DE 528 is offered in its original SNCF livery, corresponding to Period III. This presentation features the green color with yellow visibility bands, as well as the distinctive red end crosspieces characteristic of the earliest liveries of these diesel locomotives. The 040 DE numbering places the model before the generalized adoption of the BB 63500 designation.

The “Rouen–Le Havre” mention links this reproduction to the SNCF West network. This Norman route, connecting two major rail hubs and the port of Le Havre, provides a coherent setting to stage the locomotive in a station, depot, freight yard, or industrial service environment during Period III.

The REE Models scale model

The JM017S reference is a REE Models locomotive from the REE Access range. It reproduces the 040 DE 528 at HO scale, i.e. 1/87. The decoration includes raised number plates, a detail that reinforces the character of this original version.

This locomotive is intended for HO layouts in DC 2-rail. Its DCC Sound version enables sound-equipped digital operation on a DCC-controlled layout. It is therefore a relevant choice for modellers who want to combine the visual presence of an SNCF diesel locomotive from the 1950s and 1960s with immersive digital operation.

Use on a model railway

The 040 DE 528 naturally fits into a Period III French layout. Its profile as a versatile locomotive makes it easy to integrate into many railway scenes: shunting wagons in a freight station, depot movements, servicing a shed, a factory, or a specific siding, or hauling small consists on a non-electrified secondary line.

It can be paired with Period III freight wagons such as covered wagons, open wagons (gondolas), flat wagons, or tank wagons. In a layout inspired by the West network, it helps recreate the railway atmosphere of installations around Rouen, Le Havre, and the regional lines served by SNCF. Its original livery is particularly suited to layouts set before the generalization of the more recent BB 63500 livery decorations.
