Ever-increasing performance demands prompted the Austrian locomotive industry to develop a completely new, high-performance electric locomotive using thyristor technology in the early 1970s. From 1976 to 1995, ÖBB acquired 217 units of the four-axle 1044 series electric locomotive. These locomotives, with a power output of 5,120 kW and a top speed of 160 km/h, defined the modern image of ÖBB for many years. In the early years, hauling high-quality express trains was the primary function. Over time, freight transport, push-pull train services, and push-shunting and pre-stressing operations on mountain lines also became part of their intended applications.
