The parade line of locomotive 2D2 9100 was the "Imperial Line", linking Paris, the French capital, to Marseille, on the Mediterranean coast, via Lyon.
With a top speed of 140 kilometers per hour and a tractive effort of 900 tons, they were intended for use as express locomotives. The SNCF ordered an initial batch of 35 locomotives in 1950. In fact, the number of 2D2 9100 locomotives was expected to increase to 100 over time.
Although the silhouette appears relatively modern, the engineering of this locomotive dates back to the 1920s. These locomotives were therefore quickly replaced by more modern locomotives of the CC 7100 series. Smaller and lighter engines replaced the expensive and difficult-to-maintain Buchli engine, which was used on the 2D2 9100 locomotives. Nevertheless, the 2D2 9100 locomotives remained in service until the 1980s.
