Starting in 1976, the French National Railway Company (SNCF) acquired 237 BB 7200 multi-purpose locomotives for use on the French DC network. The locomotives' distinctive "broken nose" design was created by the Frenchman Paul Arzens. Some locomotives were equipped with special buffers for hauling variable-gauge "Talgo III RD" trains. To identify these buffers, the bodies were painted red.
