The Arnold HN2584 is an electric locomotive at N scale 1/160 reproducing the SNCF CC 14014. It carries a green and yellow decoration corresponding to Era IV, a period commonly used in railway modelling classification between 1971 and 1990. This miniature reproduction lets you stage one of France’s imposing locomotives with a central cab, nicknamed “flatirons”.

The real railway vehicle

The CC 14014 belongs to the CC 14000 series, a group of six-axle electric locomotives built for the SNCF during the 1950s. These machines were developed in the context of electrification in single-phase AC 25 kV – 50 Hz on the North-East main line, notably between Valenciennes and Thionville. This major route served regions strongly marked at the time by mining and steelmaking activities.

CC 14000 locomotives were primarily intended to haul heavy freight trains. They notably pulled convoys related to coal, iron ore, coke, and steel industry production. Their design addressed the need to move large tonnages at low speed on an industrial network with demanding operating conditions. The Co’Co wheel arrangement, with two three-axle bogies, helped provide the adhesion required for this type of service.

Their silhouette is immediately recognizable by the central driver’s cab on the body, flanked by two long hoods. This distinctive architecture earned the CC 14000 family, like other contemporary French locomotives with a central cab, the nickname “flatiron”. The CC 14000 locomotives thus represent an iconic example of the early days of modern electric traction in industrial single-phase AC at the SNCF.

The decoration reproduced

This Arnold locomotive reproduces the CC 14014 in SNCF green and yellow colors. The livery is associated with Era IV and is suitable for representing a French network across the 1970s and 1980s. It fits naturally into a railway scene of Northern and Eastern France, with freight facilities, marshalling yards, industrial sidings, mining sites, or steelmaking areas.

The green and yellow livery gives strong visual presence to a locomotive whose massive shapes are already very distinctive. It allows you to create realistic freight traffic scenes, where a high-power locomotive hauls long rakes of wagons loaded with raw materials or industrial products.

The model

The HN2584 reference is designed for N scale networks, at 1/160. Its coreless motor is paired with a flywheel, a feature that helps provide smooth running. The pantographs are functional in a non-electrical way and contribute to the visual fidelity of this French electric locomotive. The model is also equipped with a close-coupling system, suited to forming rakes with a tighter appearance.

The locomotive is intended to run on curves with a minimum radius of 192 mm. This is important when planning an N scale layout, ensuring regular running of this CC on the most sinuous sections of the route. The buffers are not spring-loaded.

Use on a model railway layout

The Arnold CC 14014 is ideally suited at the head of Era IV freight trains. It can be integrated into a rake of open wagons, hopper wagons, covered wagons, or flat wagons, depending on the industrial atmosphere you want to recreate. It is particularly well matched to layouts representing the transport of coal, ore, coke, metallurgical products, or other heavy freight traffic.

On a French N scale layout, this locomotive also helps bring to life an electric depot, a freight station, a freight shed, a marshalling yard track group, or an industrial siding installation. Its central-cab body and green livery with yellow faces make it a standout piece for fans of SNCF electric traction and French railway rolling stock from the 1970s and 1980s.
