The Arnold electric locomotive HN2584S represents the CC 14014 of the SNCF, in green and yellow livery from Era IV. Reproduced at the N 1/160 scale, this six-axle machine belongs to the CC 14000 family, emblematic of the early days of 25 kV AC electrification in Eastern and Northern France. This version comes with an integrated multi-protocol sound decoder for digital operation on a 2-rail DC layout.

With its very distinctive silhouette featuring a central cab flanked by two long hoods, the CC 14014 brings strong character to an Era IV French N-scale layout. Its green and yellow livery, SNCF markings, and four modern low-mounted headlights match the version reproduced by Arnold under reference HN2584S.

The real railway vehicle

The CC 14000 were designed to haul heavy freight trains on the Valenciennes–Thionville main line, electrified at 25 kV 50 Hz. This route connected, among other areas, the coal basins of the North to iron-ore producing regions in the East, where large volumes destined for industry were transported.

Built in 20 units between 1955 and 1959, the CC 14000 were Co’Co’ wheel arrangement locomotives with six powered axles. They were intended for heavy, slow trains, notably made up of wagons loaded with coal, coke, ore, or other heavy bulk materials. Their maximum speed of 60 km/h suited their role in industrial freight traction.

The central driving cab, combined with the two longitudinal hoods, earned these locomotives the nickname “iron” (“fer à repasser”). This characteristic architecture visually links them to the BB 12000, BB 13000 and CC 14100, contemporaries of the first major French electrification in industrial current.

Reproduced livery

Here, the CC 14014 is presented in an SNCF green and yellow livery associated with Era IV. The front features four modern headlights positioned low—an unmistakable detail of this Arnold reproduction. This livery allows the locomotive to be integrated into SNCF freight scenes from the modern part of Era IV on 25 kV electrified lines.

The Arnold scale model

Arnold offers a metal reproduction with metal chassis and body. The locomotive is fitted with fully metal pantographs, intended to represent operation under overhead catenary. Power transmission includes a flywheel to help maintain smooth running and regular circulation.

The HN2584S runs on a 2-rail DC layout and is designed for DCC digital operation. Its integrated multi-protocol sound decoder adds an extra dimension to layout animation. Lighting includes alternating white and red lights depending on direction; their functions can be controlled separately in digital operation.

The locomotive is equipped with a Next18 interface compliant with NEM 662, as well as a short-coupling mechanism. Its length over buffers is 118 mm, consistent with an installation on an N-scale layout. The minimum radius announced is 192 mm.

Use on a miniature layout

The Arnold CC 14014 naturally fits at the head of heavy freight trains in N scale: bulk tipper wagons, hopper wagons, ore wagons, covered wagons, and industrial consists. It is particularly well suited for recreating railway atmospheres from Northern and Eastern France, with marshalling yards, steelworks, mines, industrial sidings, and electrified lines.

Its compact 1/160 scale profile makes it possible to stage a striking French Co’Co’ locomotive even on layouts with tight curves that still respect the minimum radius of 192 mm. Under decorative catenary, its metal pantographs complete the scenes with realistic SNCF electric traction.
