The Arnold electric locomotive HN2583 reproduces the SNCF CC 14101, presented in its original blue livery. Built at the N 1/160 scale, this model depicts the first locomotive of the CC 14100 series in its early-career configuration, characteristic of Era III. It is a locomotive for miniature railway layouts with analog DC 2-rail power supply.

Real-world rolling stock

The CC 14100 belongs to a major family of French electric locomotives designed for heavy freight traffic. They were built to support the electrification of the North-East main line, connecting in particular Valenciennes to Thionville. This route played a key role in industrial exchanges between the coal basins of the North and the steel regions of the East.

These locomotives were especially intended for hauling heavy trains, made up notably of iron ore wagons, coal, coke, or metallurgical products. Their Co'Co' wheel arrangement, with two bogies each carrying three powered axles, met the need to deliver high tractive effort at low speed. The top speed of the series was limited to 60 km/h, a value consistent with the heavy freight services it was assigned to.

The CC 14100 operated on single-phase 25 kV 50 Hz. Their electrical equipment was based on a rotating converter group: a synchronous motor drove DC generators that supplied the traction motors. This technology provided strong starting capability, essential for heavy trains on lines with demanding profiles.

With their central cab flanked by two long hoods, the CC 14100 had a very recognizable silhouette. This architecture earned them the nickname “iron” (fer à repasser), shared with other contemporary French electric locomotives featuring a central cab. The CC 14101 opens the numbering of a series ranging from CC 14101 to CC 14202.

Decoration reproduced

The HN2583 reference recreates the CC 14101 in its early-period blue decoration. This livery evokes the beginnings of operation of the series in the mid-1950s, in the context of modernization of electric traction on major French industrial routes. The SNCF markings and original presentation make it easy to integrate the locomotive into an Era III depiction of the French railway network.

The Arnold scale model

This N-scale reproduction benefits from a coreless motor and a flywheel, equipment intended to promote smooth running. The pantographs are functional in a non-electrical way. The locomotive also features close-coupling couplers, suited to building realistic freight consists on a miniature layout.

Its original blue livery distinguishes it from later versions of the series and makes it particularly suitable for compositions from the early electrification period in 25 kV 50 Hz. It will appeal to collectors of SNCF motive power as well as to modelers who want to recreate the atmosphere of major industrial traffic in Era III.
