The Arnold HN2583S reproduces in N scale 1/160 the electric locomotive CC 14101 of the SNCF, in its original blue livery from Period III. This DC 2-rail model features a coreless motor with flywheel and a multi-protocol sound decoder.
The Arnold electric locomotive HN2583S reproduces the SNCF CC 14101 in its original blue livery, characteristic of its first years in service. Built at N scale 1/160, this sound-equipped digital model depicts the first locomotive of the CC 14100 series, a family of French locomotives with a silhouette that is particularly easy to recognize thanks to its central cab framed by two long hoods.
This Arnold model is designed for DC 2-rail model railways. It is fitted with a multi-protocol sound decoder, a coreless motor with flywheel, mechanically operating pantographs (without electrical pickup from the overhead wire), and close-coupling couplers. Its minimum curve radius is 192 mm, making it easy to integrate into many N-scale layouts.
Real rolling stock
The CC 14100 locomotives belong to the first generation of French locomotives designed for single-phase AC power at 25 kV 50 Hz. They were developed in the mid-1950s to support the electrification of the main Nord-Est line, connecting in particular Valenciennes to Thionville. This rail corridor served major industrial basins and was a key route for the transport of heavy goods.
These six powered-axle locomotives with Co’Co’ wheel arrangement were primarily intended to haul heavy freight trains. They were used notably for convoys related to transporting iron ore, coal, coke, and steel industry production. Their limited speed matched this mission perfectly: prioritizing tractive effort and the ability to get massive consists moving rather than high-speed running.
The CC 14100 series is also distinguished by its electrical equipment using a rotating converter group. This solution was part of the various technical approaches studied by the SNCF when adopting industrial current at 50 Hz. Trials carried out with several locomotive families on the Nord-Est line helped build decisive experience for modern electrification of the French network.
The central cab placed in the middle of the body earned the CC 14100 locomotives the nickname “iron” (“fer à repasser”). This layout, shared by several French locomotives from the same period, gives the CC 14101 a very distinctive presence: two symmetrical hoods frame an elevated cab, while three-axle bogies highlight the locomotive’s heavy-haul traction role.
Decoration reproduced
Arnold reproduces the CC 14101 in its original blue livery, presented as part of SNCF Period III. The number 14101 is of special interest because it corresponds to the first locomotive of this series. This version helps recreate the atmosphere of the early days of 25 kV 50 Hz electrification in Northern and Eastern France, during the era of major industrial flows transported by rail.
The model
The HN2583S reference combines a CC 14101 reproduction with digital operation with sound. The coreless motor is complemented by a flywheel, an arrangement that supports smooth running. The pantographs are mechanically functional, without electrical pickup from the overhead catenary. Buffers are fixed, and the close-coupling couplers help form visually coherent consists.
Reversing white and red lighting indicates the direction of travel. The multi-protocol sound decoder allows the locomotive to be used on a compatible digital layout. The Arnold CC 14101 is therefore aimed at modellers who want the historical character of an SNCF locomotive from the 1950s, combined with digital control and an immersive sound ambiance.
Use on a model railway
This N-scale locomotive naturally fits into a Period III French layout focused on the North or East regions, on mining facilities, industrial sidings, marshalling yards, or major electrified freight routes. It is particularly well suited for building long freight trains: open hoppers for bulk materials, hopper wagons, covered wagons, or mixed consists representing the industrial activity of the period.
With its original blue livery, the CC 14101 can also serve as a centerpiece in a collection dedicated to the SNCF’s early AC 25 kV 50 Hz locomotives. Its “iron” look provides an immediately recognizable French railway identity, whether on display or leading a train on an N-scale layout.
