The Roco 7310095 reproduces the SNCF diesel shunter Y 8208 in H0. This sound-equipped digital version features a digitally switchable shunting coupler, an onboard decoder, a buffer capacitor, and LED lighting with an illuminated cab.

    HO - 1/87 DCC - 2 Rail Digital V (1991 - 2005) SNCF VI (since 2005)

The Roco 7310095 is a diesel locomotive model of the SNCF shunter Y 8208, in H0 scale. Classified for Periods V and VI, this miniature model is designed for operation on a two-rail DC current system and for digital operation. It is equipped with an onboard decoder offering switchable sound and lighting functions, as well as a digitally controlled shunting coupler.

The Y 8208 belongs to the Y 8000 series of shunters used by the SNCF for shunting operations. The first unit of this series, the Y 8001, left the Moyse works in July 1977. In total, 525 units were built to handle wagon movements in stations, marshalling yards, workshops, and maintenance facilities. More powerful and longer than the engines that preceded them, the Y 8000 could also be used to haul light freight trains on line.

A shunter is primarily an engine intended for short-distance work: assembling or breaking up consists, moving wagons on service tracks, serving sidings, and performing technical movements within a depot. The Y 8000 series therefore highlights an essential aspect of railway operations—less visible than passenger trains, yet indispensable for freight traffic and for organizing railway installations.

At the time they entered service, the Y 8000 received a livery inspired by that of the BB 63500, combining orange, brown, and white. During their careers, these shunters carried various SNCF logos, up to the Carmillon logo. Some units were also assigned to specific activities, including Fret, Infra, or TER. The Roco model carries the SNCF registration Y 8208.

The model benefits from a design suited to shunting on a model railway layout. The front-mounted motor housing and the transmission block are made from die-cast zinc to increase the model’s weight and tractive effort. Both axles are driven and there is an adhesion bandage. The locomotive can therefore pull or push wagons on service tracks—in a freight station, a marshalling yard track group, an industrial area, or a depot.

The body is finely detailed with numerous added parts and separate handrails. The reproduced cab remains visible through the windows. Lighting includes two front lights and two end-of-train lights, reversed according to the direction of travel. The lights are LED. LED cab lighting, digitally switchable, completes the lighting functions. Sounds and lighting are controlled by the onboard decoder.

The buffer capacitor improves electrical power continuity when passing through less favorable track sections, such as turnouts, crossing frogs, or dirty track areas. The digitally switchable shunting coupler adds another dimension to operating scenarios: it enhances siding service and the characteristic wagon movements performed by a shunter.

With a length over buffers of 117 mm and a minimum radius of 358 mm, this H0 diesel locomotive fits into an SNCF layout set in Periods V and VI. It is particularly suitable for creating animated scenes around a freight shed, a specific siding, a terminal installation, a workshop, or a depot. It can be staged with freight wagons to form short, realistic consists dedicated to local shunting operations.
