Class 10 steam locomotive - The BLACK SWAN of the Bundesbahn.
Although the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) considered steam traction an outdated model, in 1953 it commissioned Krupp in Essen to develop a new Pacific locomotive for express trains. In 1957, two elegant examples of the 2'C1' h3 type, 26,503 mm long and partially streamlined, with a driving wheel diameter of 2,000 mm, were delivered under serial number 10. They were clearly distinguished by their combustion system. While 10001 was initially equipped only with an auxiliary oil-fired heater (a modification was later carried out), 10002 had a primary oil-fired heater from the outset. Both locomotives, adorned with silver-colored decorative lines and fitted with conical smokebox doors, achieved a top speed of 140 km/h with an induced power of 1,839 kW. Due to their high axle load, the two locomotives were only authorized to operate on certain main lines. Until 1962, they were based at the Bebra depot, and later at the Kassel depot, from where they were used for heavy express train service on the North-South line and the Main-Weser Bahn. The general structural changes associated with the increasing electrification of the main lines were the primary reasons why the Class 10 locomotives did not enter series production. In January 1967, locomotive 10002 suffered a broken valve gear rod and was withdrawn from service. In 1972, it was scrapped at the Offenburg depot. In June of the following year, locomotive 10001 also had to be withdrawn from active service with the Deutsche Bundesbahn. The 109-tonne locomotive, however, was preserved for posterity and can still be admired today at the German Steam Locomotive Museum in Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg.
