The Märklin 48193 set reproduces three private automatic discharge wagons of the Tanoos type, with four axles, in a light grey base livery. These wagons belong to VTG’s Swiss subsidiary and carry Dutch registration. Made in H0 scale (1:87), this set represents Era VI and is suited for recreating contemporary European freight traffic.

Each wagon has a different running number, adding realistic variety to the consist. The set therefore provides a coherent starting point for building a uniform train of covered wagons with automatic discharge, both on a Swiss-inspired model railway and on an installation evoking international exchanges across Europe.

Prototype information

Automatic discharge wagons are designed to transport bulk goods and to allow unloading via discharge devices integrated into the lower part of the wagon body. Their design makes unloading operations easier at suitable facilities, without requiring the cargo to be tipped out by overturning the wagon.

The presence of a roof addresses the need to protect the load from weather. On the Tanoos wagons reproduced here, the rotating roof provides access to the loading area. This type of wagon fits into the fleet of private wagons used on the European rail network, where vehicles can be registered in one country while operating internationally.

VTG Switzerland livery

The reproduced livery combines a light grey body with the identity of VTG’s Swiss subsidiary. The three wagons are registered in the Netherlands, highlighting the international character of modern rail freight and the management of private wagons. This presentation is tailored to networks representing Era VI, with freight trains made up of rolling stock from different administrative origins.

The Märklin scale model

Märklin offers a detailed reproduction of these Tanoos wagons. The wagon bodies include many added parts, including discharge equipment, handwheels, and handrails. The platforms are also added to reproduce with finesse the distinctive exterior equipment of these wagons.

The rotating roofs are functional. This feature allows the wagons to be represented in different operating situations: closed on the line or opened during loading operations. The three models are packed separately in their outer packaging. This item is made in collaboration with PIKO Spielwaren GmbH, in Sonneberg.

Using it on a model railway

The Märklin 48193 set is particularly suitable for forming a complete consist of Tanoos wagons. It can be used in modern freight operations, behind a locomotive appropriate to Era VI, on a main line as well as on an industrial spur. The consistent appearance of the three wagons emphasizes the uniform nature of bulk rail transports.

With a total length over buffers of about 55 cm, the set offers a noticeable presence without creating an excessively long train. In addition, the functional rotating roofs make it possible to animate a loading area or a goods terminal on an H0 layout.
