HO - 1/87 DCC - 2 Rail Digital VI (since 2005) SNCF

Attention, item on backorder, delivery end of 2026.

The REE Models JM023S locomotive is a French diesel locomotive in HO 1/87. It reproduces the SNCF BB 164044, from the BB 63000 / BB 63500 family, in its “En Voyage” decoration featuring the SNCF Carmillon logo. This version is intended for DC 2-rail layouts and includes DCC Sound equipment for sound digital operation. The model is set in Era VI.

With its two differently sized long hoods framing a central cab, the BB 164044 takes up the instantly recognizable silhouette of diesel shunting and secondary-line locomotives from the large BB 63500 family. This locomotive lets you represent contemporary SNCF diesel traction on an HO model railway inspired by French railway facilities.

Real rolling stock

The BB 63500 make up an important series of SNCF diesel-electric locomotives. Designed to meet the very varied needs of non-electrified lines, they have handled shunting, local service, freight train hauling, and service duties. Their design combines a central driving cab and two asymmetrical hoods housing the technical equipment.

These locomotives stand out for their versatility. They were used in marshalling yards, overflow tracks, special sidings, depots and industrial facilities, as well as on secondary lines. Their top speed, suited to services and operational movements, along with their robustness, made them particularly common on the French rail landscape for several decades.

The BB 63500 also took part in maintenance-related operations: transporting engineering equipment, shunting in railway bases, and hauling work trains. Their longevity allowed some units to experience successive SNCF organizations and different visual identities, including Fret, Infra and “En Voyage” liveries.

“En Voyage” livery and the Carmillon logo

The reproduced decoration combines the “En Voyage” livery with the so-called Carmillon SNCF logo. This term refers to the color gradient of the SNCF logo, ranging from carmine to vermilion. Applying this visual identity to certain diesel locomotives reflects the evolution of SNCF’s brand image during Era VI.

This presentation is particularly suitable for depicting a modern SNCF environment: passenger station, depot, stabling area, service yard, terminal sidings, or a railway works site. It offers an interesting alternative to the green, yellow, or orange liveries that locomotives from this family also carried.

The REE Models scale model

The JM023S reference is the DCC Sound version of this BB 164044. It is designed for digital operation on HO DC 2-rail layouts. Digital sound enhances driving and shunting sequences, placing the locomotive at the heart of the animation of a depot or a miniature station scene.

The body reproduces the characteristic architecture of the BB 63000 / BB 63500, with the central cab and the two hoods. The decoration matches the BB 164044 in “En Voyage” livery, with the Carmillon logo. This locomotive is therefore a coherent choice for fans of SNCF diesel rolling stock from Era VI and for collectors of French locomotives at the 1/87 scale.

Use on a model railway

Thanks to the versatile role of locomotives from this family, the BB 164044 naturally fits into many HO railway scenes. It can handle wagon shunting on an overflow track, move a consist within a depot, take over a local service, or participate in the circulation of a work train. Its “En Voyage” decoration is suited to layouts evoking the last decades of operation of this type of locomotive at SNCF.

It is suitable for DCC digital layouts looking for a sound French diesel locomotive, both for realistic operation and to expand an Era VI SNCF motive power fleet.
