The REE Modèles JM021S locomotive is a diesel locomotive model of the SNCF BB 64079 at HO 1/87 scale. This version depicts the machine in its Arzens orange 435 livery, featuring the so-called “cap” SNCF logo, a hallmark of era V. It is designed for DC 2-rail model railways and includes DCC Sound operation.

Prototype information

The BB 64079 belongs to the large family of BB 63500 locomotives, diesel shunting and local service engines that played a major role in French rail operations. These two-bogie locomotives, recognizable by their central cab flanked by two hoods of different lengths, were suited to operations requiring a compact, versatile locomotive available across many depots.

The BB 63500s provided a wide range of services: shunting in stations and yards, forming freight trains, serving terminal sidings and industrial connections, running on service tracks, and handling light freight convoys. Their presence across the SNCF network made them particularly representative of everyday rail activity, far beyond mainline services alone.

The numbering from BB 63501 to BB 64080 corresponds to this series. BB 64079 is therefore one of the last numbers in the sequence. In era V, this type of locomotive remains highly evocative of shunting, freight yard movements, and local services carried out in a modernized rail environment.

The Arzens livery

The model reproduces the so-called Arzens livery in orange 435. This high-contrast presentation was designed to improve the visibility of locomotives used in shunting operations and across railway premises. It is associated with the French designer Paul Arzens, to whom SNCF entrusted several liveries that became iconic for French motive power.

On this BB 64079, the orange body is completed by the SNCF “cap” logo. This graphic identity matches an SNCF era V presentation, reproduced here by REE Modèles to depict a typical machine from the years 1992 to 2004. The Arzens livery is especially well suited for creating shunting yard scenes, freight stations, diesel depot settings, industrial sidings, and freight yards.

The REE Modèles scale model

Reference JM021S is an HO scale reproduction of the SNCF BB 64079. It uses the 1/87 scale, the standard for HO model railroading, and fits into a standard-gauge miniature infrastructure reproduced at this scale.

This locomotive runs on DC 2-rail track and features DCC Sound technology. It is intended for DCC digital control and adds sound to the operation of the layout. This setup makes it suitable for modellers who want to integrate an SNCF diesel shunting locomotive into a digital (DCC) operating scheme.

REE Modèles precisely identifies this variant with the JM021S reference: BB 64079, SNCF, Arzens orange 435 livery, “cap” logo, era V, and DCC Sound. This clear definition helps you choose a consistent version for recreating a French rail network from the late 20th century and the early 2000s.

Use on a model railway

The BB 64079 naturally fits into an HO French layout set in era V. It can animate the shunting operations of a freight station, move wagons within an industrial area, run around a depot, or serve an industrial siding. Its real-world use also supports the depiction of local freight trains and technical movements on service tracks.

The silhouette of a BB 63500 in Arzens livery is a strong visual landmark in a French railway scene. Paired with period-appropriate freight wagons, it helps recreate the atmosphere of freight yards and SNCF facilities where diesel shunting locomotives remained essential for day-to-day operations.
