The REE Modèles VB481 set is a two UIC B9c9x high-roofed sleeper passenger cars, reproduced in HO scale (1/87 ). These two SNCF cars feature the blue livery associated with Wasteels and date from Era IV . They allow for the creation of night trains reminiscent of major French and international passenger routes.

The actual equipment

The UIC sleeper cars of type B9c9x are part of the SNCF's UIC car family. Their design complied with the recommendations of the International Union of Railways, whose objective was to promote the interoperability of cars in international operations.

The designation B9c9x indicates a second-class sleeping car. These cars comprise nine commercial compartments, each configured for six passengers at night, as well as a service area. They thus offer a total of 54 sleeping berths. They are also equipped for overnight travel, with toilets and washrooms located throughout the car.

The B9c9x UIC carriages were used on SNCF's long-distance night trains. Their large capacity met the needs of seasonal services, peak traffic to winter sports resorts, and long-distance routes. The high roof is a distinctive feature of some carriages in the series: it provides more space in the upper part of the compartments, benefiting passengers in the upper berths.

Wasteels decoration

The reproduced decoration evokes the SNCF sleeping cars marked Wasteels . Wasteels was a Belgian tour operator whose name appeared on a group of UIC B9c9x coaches used for services to the Iberian Peninsula. These coaches were used for international services between France and Spain.

For these services, some B9c9x units were equipped with interchangeable bogies to allow them to cross the change in gauge between the French and Spanish networks. The bogie exchange took place at the border. The presence of the Wasteels markings thus gives a very distinctive character to a night train operating on the major international lines of southwestern France.

The blue livery with a high roof offered in this set is suitable for representing Era IV, a period covering the years 1971 to 1991 in the French railway classification. It is a coherent choice for recreating the atmosphere of night trains from this period, within a train made up of SNCF carriages with complementary functions.

The scale model

REE Modèles offers, under reference VB481, two reproductions of UIC B9c9x high-roof sleeping cars. The set is made to HO scale, or 1/87 , the standard scale for many French model railway layouts.

Each car is based on the design of a second-class SNCF sleeper car, with its UIC-type body, high roof, and blue Wasteels livery. Together in a single set, the two cars provide an immediate and credible basis for an overnight passenger train, without being limited to a single isolated car.

Use on a miniature network

This set is a natural fit for an HO scale layout inspired by the SNCF (French National Railways) of Era IV, particularly in a mainline station, a passenger depot, or a nighttime departure scene. The carriages can be integrated into a night train composed of other French passenger carriages from the same period, with a locomotive appropriate for the route being represented.

The Wasteels livery is particularly well-suited to depicting international services to Spain. The two carriages can also be used to stage a stop at a border station, a train maneuver, or a seasonal service. Their function as sleeping cars adds a specific dimension to passenger train compositions: that of night travel, distinct from daytime trains composed of seated carriages.
