The Jouef HJ4214 set reproduces, in HO scale (1/87) , the second section (2/2) of a SNCF Sud Express train. It comprises three passenger cars: a lounge car from the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (CIWL) and two short DEV Inox coaches . This composition evokes the grand French international express trains of eras III and IV , combining the prestige of the CIWL coaches with the modern look of the SNCF's stainless steel coaches.
Designed for HO scale 2-rail DC layouts, this Jouef set provides a particularly interesting base for building a characterful French passenger express. It is set number 2/2 of the "Sud Express" consist, offered under reference HJ4214.
The actual equipment
The Sud Express is one of the iconic international rail links of Europe. Opened in 1887 , it connected Paris to the Iberian Peninsula and represented a major link to Portugal. Its name remains associated with long-distance travel and the development of high-quality international services.
After the Second World War, major passenger services combined rolling stock from different generations, reflecting the modernization of the railway fleet. The CIWL carriages gave these trains a particularly elegant character. The Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (CIWL) is historically known for its sleeping cars, dining cars, and lounge cars, which operated on numerous European international routes.
The DEV Inox carriages are part of the modernization of French passenger cars. Their stainless steel body gives them a distinctive metallic appearance, immediately recognizable in post-war SNCF trainsets. The shorter versions allow for the recreation of the diversity of French and international express trainsets from eras III and IV.
The composition reproduced
The HJ4214 set combines a CIWL lounge car with two short DEV Inox coaches. This pairing highlights the visual contrast between the elegance of the CIWL coaches and the functional, bright, and metallic style of the SNCF stainless steel coaches. The markings and presentation of the set are SNCF-related, while the lounge car recalls CIWL's historical role in major international trains.
This reference is identified as part no. 2/2 of the Sud Express. It can be combined with the Jouef HJ4213 set, part no. 1/2, which includes a CIWL restaurant car and two short DEV Inox coaches, to create a more complete passenger train on a model railway.
The scale model
The three carriages are reproduced in HO scale (1/87). The set features interior lighting , which highlights the train during nighttime operation or in a lit station. The carriages have close couplings , promoting a coherent presentation of the train on the line, as well as spring-loaded buffers .
The box has a total length of 807 mm excluding buffers . It is designed for a minimum curve radius of 356.5 mm . The couplings are mounted in standard NEM 362 boxes with close coupling kinematics.
Use on a miniature network
The Jouef HJ4214 is suitable for reproducing SNCF and international passenger services from eras III and IV. It naturally fits behind a locomotive appropriate for these periods, in an express or international train formation. The CIWL lounge car adds a distinctive touch to the train, while the two short DEV Inox coaches reinforce its SNCF identity.
Thanks to its interior lighting and close couplings, this set is particularly well-suited to HO scale layouts featuring a large station, an electrified or non-electrified main line, and nighttime train services. Combined with the HJ4213 set, it allows for a more complete representation of the Sud Express.
