The US Heavyweight passenger car set Trix 23729 reproduces a four-car consist of the Union Pacific Railroad (UP), decorated in the elegant two-tone grey Two-Tone Grey livery. Designed for H0, this set represents a service condition from 1948 to 1952, corresponding to Era III. It combines a four-axle baggage-and-passenger (combination) car, two six-axle seating cars, and a six-axle observation car with a lounge and a platform at one end.

This arrangement brings together emblematic types of American passenger cars. With a total length of about 112 cm and an observation car at the rear, the consist has a particularly recognizable silhouette on a North American-inspired model layout.

The real railway rolling stock

The term Heavyweight refers to American passenger cars built with heavy construction. These vehicles formed trains made up of cars with complementary functions, meeting the needs of passenger transport and baggage handling.

The Baggage-Chair Car combines a baggage compartment with spaces for passengers. It allows baggage processing to be integrated within the train itself. The two Chair Cars, i.e. seating cars, are the actual passenger cars. The consist ends with an Observation Car, a car equipped here with an office/lounge and an observation platform at one end. This rear arrangement is one of the most recognizable features of major American passenger trains.

Union Pacific Two-Tone Grey livery

All four cars carry the Two-Tone Grey livery of the Union Pacific Railroad. This American railway company is identified by the UP initials. The decoration reproduced matches the 1948–1952 period stated for the set, ensuring a consistent presentation across all vehicles.

The contrast between the two grey shades highlights the lines of the car bodies and brings out the variety of cars in the consist. Placed at the end of the train, the observation car provides a distinctive visual conclusion to this American passenger set.

The Trix model

Trix equips all cars in the set with warm-white LED interior lighting installed at the factory. Each car also includes a buffer capacitor. The observation platform on the rear car is also provided with lighting.

The baggage-and-passenger combination car integrates a DCC/mfx digital decoder compatible with RailCom. This enables digital control of various lighting functions. The same car also provides electrical power supply to the entire consist.

The vehicles are connected using current-carrying short coupler heads fitted at the factory between the cars. The consist therefore needs to follow the intended order. Standard short coupler heads are fitted at both outer ends of the train: on the baggage compartment side and on the observation platform side.

Use on a model railway layout

This set is suitable for recreating a Union Pacific passenger train in an American setting from the late 1940s and early 1950s. The four cars alone form a complete, immediately recognizable consist, with the observation car placed at the rear.

The set is designed as a complement to the American steam locomotive Challenger Trix 25913. Pairing these Heavyweight cars with this locomotive allows you to build a coherent American passenger train in H0 scale.
