In the early 1990s, SNCF needed second-hand diesel-electric locomotives for the construction of new high-speed lines. Thus, 44 used 2400 series locomotives were purchased from the Dutch Railways. The purchase contract stipulated an overhaul by the Tilburg workshops. Using two locomotives at each end of the trains provided sufficient tractive and pushing power to climb the gradients of the new line with the required tonnage. In SNCF's numbering system, the 2400 series locomotives were classified in the 60000-70000 series. Very quickly, the 62400 series locomotives were nicknamed "Dutch" by French railway workers.
