The introduction of the new "Austro-Takt" timetable in June 1991 caused a shortage of diesel locomotives with electric heating at ÖBB. To utilize the 2043 and 2143 series for passenger services, 34 locomotives from the DB 211 series were purchased. These locomotives, re-engined with Caterpillar engines, were assigned to shunting and freight train haulage in the districts of Wels, Vienna North, Amstetten, and Krems.
