HO, N, O or Z: which scale should you choose for your model train?
When starting out in model railroading, one of the first questions is choosing the scale. This choice influences the size of the trains, the space needed to build a layout, the budget, and the level of detail of the models.
Here is a guide to understanding the main scales used in model railroading.
HO scale (1/87)
The HO scale is by far the most widespread in Europe. It offers an excellent compromise between realism, size and availability of materials.
- Very large selection of locomotives and wagons
- Many brands available
- Wide range of buildings and scenery
- Ideal for beginners
For whom?
Modelers wishing to create a realistic layout with a wide choice of equipment.
N scale (1/160)
Twice as small as HO, N scale allows for the creation of impressive layouts even in a small room.
- Significant space saving
- Long convoys possible
- Very good level of detail
For whom?
Enthusiasts with limited space but wishing to build a large network.
O scale (1/43.5)
O scale prioritizes realism and detail. The locomotives are imposing and offer an exceptional level of finish.
- Very high reproduction quality
- Ease of handling
- Requires a lot of space
For whom?
For those who enjoy highly detailed models and have a large surface area available.
Z scale (1/220)
The Z-scale is one of the smallest available on the market. It allows you to create a complete network in an extremely small space.
- Minimal footprint
- Ideal for small spaces
- More delicate handling
For whom?
Experienced modelers or collectors looking for a very compact layout.

| N | ★★★★☆ | ★★★★★ | ★★★★☆ |
| O | ★★★☆☆ | ★☆☆☆☆ | ★★★☆☆ |
| Z | ★★☆☆☆ | ★★★★★ | ★★★☆☆ |
Our advice
For a first experience in model railroading, we generally recommend the HO scale. Its huge choice of locomotives, wagons, tracks and accessories makes it easy to create a progressive network, whatever your level.
If you are short on space, N scale is an excellent alternative, while still maintaining a very good level of realism.
