For the implementation of the "Bahn 2000" concept, Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) purchased 24 locomotives from this series. Another series of 75 locomotives was also manufactured to cover the combined freight corridor in Switzerland, starting on January 1, 1994. Following the division of the railways, these locomotives were subsequently reassigned to passenger service. Even today, they remain essential for regular Swiss rail traffic.
