The golden age of travel
The powerful Class 241 A steam locomotive appeared on French tracks in the early 1930s. During the golden age of rail travel before World War II, it hauled heavy express trains between Paris and the Atlantic ports of Cherbourg and Le Havre, as well as between Paris and Basel. This latter route also included the famous Arlberg Orient Express. After the war, it operated until 1965, primarily between Paris and Strasbourg, and Paris and Basel. Class 241 A 1 remains preserved at the Mulhouse Railway Museum and in Switzerland under the route number 241 A 65, making it the largest operational steam locomotive in Europe.
