The LokSound 5 XL decoder is a fairly large piece of equipment. It has to be, as it's designed for use in large-scale model railways, e.g., garden trains and 1:1 scale models. Its integrated PowerPack, which matches the increased motor power, ensures reliable operation even on dirty tracks.
The LokSound 5 XL measures 51 mm x 40 mm and is available in two different types: Besides the type with robust screw terminals for installation in older models without an interface socket, there is a version with multi-pin connectors. This version is compatible with all locomotives where an older LokSound XL decoder has previously been installed.
Operating modes
Like all products in the LokSound family, the LokSound 5 XL is a true multi-protocol decoder. It supports DCC as well as Motorola®, Selectrix®, and M4. Naturally, it supports 14 to 128 speed steps, as well as 2- and 4-digit addresses in DCC format and up to 32 functions. Thanks to RailComPlus®, the decoders register automatically with the appropriate control stations. The LGB® chain control is compatible with older LGB® control systems and can manage the functions and their respective buttons.
This decoder supports all DCC programming modes, and thanks to RailCom®, you can read CV values on the main network, provided you have a RailCom®-compatible control station. Utility registers are available for control stations that facilitate programming CVs from 1 to 255.
Motorola® users benefit from up to 28 speed steps and 255 addresses. Three additional Motorola® addresses facilitate the triggering of 16 functions. A built-in programming mode even allows programming with the good old 6021 Central Processing Unit.
The M4 protocol supports automatic recording on mfx® compatible central processing units.
The LokSound 5 XL decoder supports Märklin® braking sections as well as ZIMO® HLU braking controls or the Lenz® ABC system. Braking with DCC or DC brake generators is also possible. Furthermore, a locomotive equipped with a LokSound 5 XL will stop when a Selectrix® brake diode is connected to the circuit. The ABC push-pull function allows for automatic switching between two stations.
The LokSound 5 XL decoder is also suitable for analog DC and AC trains.
Her
The LokSound 5 XL decoder can play back up to 10 channels simultaneously. Each channel offers up to 16 bits/31250 kHz, finally delivering hi-fi sound quality on your network. In practice, no difference from the original recording is discernible. A dual Class D audio power amplifier with an output of up to 2 x 6 W drives speakers with an impedance range of 4 to 32 ohms. Volume can be controlled via two separate potentiometers. A massive 128 MB of sound memory ensures ample storage capacity.
The volume of each individual sound fragment can be adjusted separately. The highly flexible sound engine, without a rigid flowchart, facilitates prototype simulation of virtually any conceivable railway vehicle. Three independently adjustable braking functions and two alternative load scenarios give you maximum control over your vehicles.
Functions
Each LokSound 5 XL decoder features 12 amplified function outputs. In addition, there are 7 additional logic outputs, which can be used to control up to four RC servos or SUSI expansion modules. All essential lighting functions are supported, and the brightness of each output can be adjusted independently. The decoder supports automatic push and pull movements—known as coupler waltz—necessary for the reliable operation of digital couplers such as those from ROCO® and Krois®, as well as Telex® couplers. Three sensor inputs can be used to trigger functions.
Engine control
The motor control of the LokSound 5 XL has been further improved. A variable PWM pulse frequency from 10 kHz to 50 kHz ensures perfectly quiet operation, especially for coreless motors. The typical hum is now a thing of the past. Load control can now be adjusted with up to 10 separate CVs, handling even the most demanding applications. The unique "Auto Tune" function facilitates automatic calibration of the decoder to perfectly match the motor. The LokSound 5 XL decoder provides sufficient current for the motor, up to 5.0 A (4.0 A continuous). Therefore, the decoder can also handle PIKO® G-track locomotives as well as Bühler® or Mabuchi® twin-motor locomotives.
