The Z105 railcar was delivered in 1949 by the De Dietrich factories (Reichshoffen, Alsace) to the CFL (Luxembourg National Railways). The entire series, numbered from Z101 to Z110, descended directly from a prototype presented in 1933 by De Dietrich to the heads of the French railway networks of the ETAT (State Railways), the PO (Paris-Orléans Railways), the AL (Alsace Railways), and the EST (Eastern Railways). This prototype was powered by two CLM (Compagnie Lilloise des Moteurs) engines, which, together with two 4-speed DGG gearboxes, gave it a top speed of 100 km/h.
In fact, the Luxembourg railcars were identical in every respect to the French SNCF X 3700 series railcars. The CFL's Z100 series railcars entered service at the end of 1949. These railcars provided service on all of the CFL's main and secondary lines. They operated on lines that no longer exist, such as the Attert line (Pétange-Steinfort-Ettelbruck) or the Sûre Valley line (Ettelbruck-Echternach-Wasserbillig), as well as on the main lines. From 1950 onwards, the 10 railcars covered a third of the annual passenger traffic (approximately 100,000 km per unit).
