Pocher HK118 Porsche 917K - Gulf Edition

The concept was outrageous, building at great expense not one but 25 Le Mans challengers, thus qualifying for the status of "sports car", bypassing the limit of a 3.0 litre prototype.

Suddenly, the resulting 917, with its 4.5 to 5-liter engine (the largest air-cooled racing car ever built), rendered its rival prototypes obsolete. Truly one of the most iconic racing cars in motorsport history. Though initially a cumbersome beast, tamed for 1970, it quickly became a match for its rivals.

For two seasons, it trampled its opponents and won the World Championship race after race, including Le Mans in 1970 and 1971; subsequently, its speed, deemed "too fast" at over 240 mph, led decision-makers to reject high-capacity racing cars from endurance racing; at that point, it turned to America where it crushed its rivals in a turbocharged form, thus cementing its legacy as one of the greatest racing cars of all time.

This livery is the 1971 Gulf 917k, driven by British motorsport legend Derek Bell and Swiss driver Jo Siffert at the 1000 km of Monza, where it finished second, behind its sister Porsche 917k.
