In 1829, the railway company operating the Liverpool-Manchester line held a competition in Rainhill to choose the best locomotive for the line. George Stephenson won the competition with his Rocket, beating five competitors.
This locomotive, weighing a mere 4,250 kg, is equipped with a highly efficient multi-tubular boiler, 1.82 m wide and 1 m in diameter, for heat transfer. The cylinders, arranged in an inclined position, drive pistons coupled to 1.44 m diameter driving wheels to produce a speed of 49 km/h. With its features, the Rocket was the first practical and useful locomotive for transporting both passengers and freight, thus ushering in a new era in the history of transportation.
