After the end of World War II, many Class 44 locomotives remained in various European countries. The French National Railways (SNCF) received the largest number, most of which were locomotives ordered by the German Railways (DRB) from French locomotive manufacturers. A total of 226 ÜK-type locomotives were classified under the French designation 150 X, with their originally intended serial numbers. Later, they were renumbered from 150 X 1 to 150 X 226. Thirteen more locomotives came to France as war booty. Most of these locomotives were in service in eastern France, with 50 stationed in the northern region.
