The SNCF's DD DEV 66: From the 1960s onwards, rail transport services began to be used extensively throughout Europe. Night trains and daytime express trains saw the addition of platform wagons to their consist for transporting passenger vehicles. This allowed long distances to be covered by train without the need for a long road journey. Double-decker bogie wagons were built in the early 1960s for various European networks. These wagons could carry 12 vehicles, six on each level. Two-level facilities at railway terminals were required for loading. The bogies and their braking and running systems allowed these vehicles to run coupled together in express passenger trains without limiting their maximum speed. The advent of high-speed rail and the discontinuation of night trains throughout Europe led to the decline and eventual end of services provided with this type of vehicle.
