An essential component for any large model railway is the amplifier (also called a booster): if the power consumption of all the trains in motion, including their functions, the lighting of the cars, and the working models, exceeds the maximum current the control center can supply, you must divide your system into several power sections, each powered by its own booster. The ECoSBoost is designed precisely for this purpose: it is perfectly suited for use with our ESU ECoS. The ECoSBoost has an output current of 7A and comes with a suitably sized power supply.
Operating mode
The ECoSBoost connects directly to the ECoSlink port, from which it receives its control signals. Essentially, it can amplify and output the following data formats to the track: DCC, Motorola, Selectrix®, and mfx®. The data format output in any given case depends entirely on the control station used and its capabilities: therefore, the booster, when connected to an ECoS ESU, will handle DCC and Selectrix®, while when connected to a Märklin® central station, it will amplify and output Motorola® and mfx® data signals, respectively. Thanks to its "Plug & Play" functionality, all ECoSBoost units are automatically included in a list of external ECoSlink components and can be centrally controlled and configured on the ECoS display.
Proper firmware is essential for the ECoSBoost to function correctly with these control stations: If the internal software is too old, the booster may not be recognized. Please check the system requirements.
The functions
ECoSBoost amplifies the data signals generated by the central digital station and delivers them to the designated track output. ECoSBoost is powered by an included power supply with a stabilized DC output. Each ECoSBoost is conveniently controlled and configured directly by the ECoS: For each booster, you can individually determine its maximum permissible output current. Furthermore, the display can be configured to show the current power consumption of each booster, so you know how much power you have left. The ability to tell each booster individually, regardless of weather conditions, to close its section in the event of a track short circuit is extremely useful. For example, if your switching decoders (turnouts) are connected to a separate ECoSBoost, you can still reliably control your switches even if the track is shorted.
Feedback
An ECoSBoost can do more than just amplify and supply track current: each one has a built-in Global Detector (GD) function as standard for bidirectional NMRA communication. With its help, properly equipped locomotives can send information back to the ECoS as soon as the corresponding DCC standard is adopted. This is extremely useful for locating the locomotive's position on the layout or reading motor data. The ECoSBoost reads the data and sends it via the ECoSlink high-speed bus to the ECoS for further processing.
Protection
Each ECoSBoost naturally meets the relevant safety and operational requirements for network use: the track output is protected against overloads and short circuits. Of course, ECoSBoost can distinguish between a "true" short circuit and a momentary leakage current when passing over switches or gaps. We place great importance on the device's durability, just as we do with our mobile decoders.
Integrated future
The operating software of each ECoSBoost, integrated into a microcontroller, can be updated, of course, if necessary, and supplemented with additional functions. The required update is performed automatically by the ECoS central station, if needed. No action is required on your part! In this way, your ECoSBoost is literally always "up to date"!
