The Italian State Railways (FS) purchased nine ALn 442/448 diesel multiple units from the Italian manufacturer Breda to provide high-quality passenger services on non-electrified lines. Until 1972, they were primarily used as replacements for TEE locomotive-hauled trains. Food and drinks were prepared in a kitchen area, and meals were served at the passengers' seats as there was no dedicated dining area. After operating TEE services, the units were used for express trains, particularly in southern Italy. The ALn units were very popular with passengers, who appreciated their high level of comfort and the speed of their journeys, reaching a maximum speed of 140 km/h.
